Suggested Activities and Responsibilities during Internship 1
The intern should be involved in classroom activities and teaching responsibilities during Internship I. Select only the experiences that are appropriate to your grade level and can easily be implemented in your classroom setting.
Primary Focus: Implement requirements of methods coursework and other linked courses (ex. tutoring, teaching assigned lessons, etc.) as well as all Taskstream and edTPA requirements.
Interaction with students:
- Tutor individual students or small groups before, during, and/or after school
- Assist with problems of discipline and classroom management/assist with monitoring of students at various locations within the school
- Direct selected activities or facilitate a center
- Attend, supervise, and help with student clubs, athletics, school plays, etc.
- Read a book to the class/listen to students read
- Conduct an Art/Music/PE or group activity planned by the teacher
- Answer individual questions during independent practice
- Help with the administration of an assessment
- Lead a classroom discussion
- Fulfill Methods class teaching requirements
Classroom Responsibilities:
- Become familiar with the Common Core, the LEA’s pacing guides, and any instructional requirements/materials used
- Become familiar with assessments used/help grade assessments and assignments
- Supervise non-instructional time (i.e. bus lot, student lot, cafeteria, hallways, etc.)
- Take attendance/report information as allowed and required by the school
- Assist in the development of a unit/lesson/bulletin board and/or other classroom responsibilities
- Use the Media Center and available technology to gather information and materials for instruction to ensure use of a variety of instructional media
- Set up materials needed for an experiment, activity, or authentic assessment
- Set up and operate technology in the classroom
- Prepare a seating chart and learn students’ names
- Develop and use acceptable writing skills through technology available, written work (papers, notes, newsletters home, worksheets if used, PowerPoint presentations), the board, SmartBoard, and overhead projector
- Build a file of supplemental materials
- Make photocopies
- Review cumulative records if allowed
- Speak with correct grammar and enunciation
Extension Activities:
- Attend parent/teacher conferences
- Attend IEP meetings
- Attend PTA/PTO meetings
- Attend staff development opportunities, committee meetings, departmental meetings, grade-level meetings, faculty meetings, and in-service activities
