The Foundations area serves students across the college and university, providing core graduate and undergraduate courses essential to preparing students for the diverse population they will work and interact with in today’s schools and society. These courses draw on disciplines such as history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, ethnic studies, gender studies, and psychology to provide students with a deeper understanding of the social structures on which education is built and the knowledge and skills necessary to advance just and democratic forms of education. In addition, the Foundations area offers a graduate certificate in Racial Equity Studies, designed to help educators and other professionals enhance their racial literacy, develop and engage in antiracist methodologies, and become leaders on racial equity in their own schools, worksites, and communities.
