The Office of Clinical Experiences arrange for field experiences for all pre-service teachers each semester. A practicum (field experience) may be associated with a course you are taking that allows you the opportunity to go out into the classroom to observe, teach, and assist in the area of your interest. These practicum experiences are designed to help give you a glimpse of what teaching may feel like. If you are familiar with teacher education this isn’t going to be anything new for you, but your instructor and/or course may have specific requirements that you must abide by. When you are enrolled in a practicum course, the Office of Clinical Experiences provides your placement. For steps on the placement process, see below.
Field experiences are made in the Latham Clinical Schools Network (LSCN), per the LCSN Map. Some special programs have the opportunity to be placed in additional counties across the state of North Carolina where the College of Education has existing agreements.
Professional Expectations
The College of Education expects students to follow the ECU dress code and Social Media Policy at all times.
Application Instructions
For Students
- For a step by step on how to submit a request.
- Submit a Practicum Application Request.
- Allow 6 weeks for placement approvals.
- ALL placement information will be sent to the course instructor.
If changes occur in the information included on the application after the application is completed, the student should complete the application again with the updated information. The OCE Coordinators will use the latest information entered if a student has multiple requests for the same course. All changes must be made prior to the application deadline.
For Faculty
- Once the practicum coordinator shares your roster, please verify your roster and get it back to the coordinator within 2 days.
- Due to student registration, some roster verifications may need to be updated.
- If you do not receive a roster verification, OCE is not working to secure placements for your course.
Once rosters are verified and the roster verification deadline has passed, rosters are final. After which, the placement coordinators will work towards placing students listed on the roster. Any student who is added by the instructor after the roster verification deadline, will have to be provided an alternative assignment.
Field Experience Courses and Requirements
You may be wondering which of your courses require a field experience and what the requirements are! Please use the link below to search if your course has a practicum associated with it.
If a student is requesting an out-of-county placement, they may be asked to complete additional requirements before the placement is approved. For additional information on county requirements, you may visit the Practicum County requirements link below. There will be no private school or out-of-state placements made. No students will be placed with relatives (adults or children).
Placement Materials
Students will need a Verification Log that is turned in to their instructor and kept on record for at least one year.
