University Supervisor

Training

All new supervisors must attend a half-day orientation session conducted by the Office of Clinical Experiences to become familiar with the expectations for supervising interns. These orientations are scheduled according to the needs of the faculty involved.

Topics include: roles and responsibilities of the intern, clinical teacher and university supervisor during the internship; paperwork and deadlines; and working with a marginal intern.

     

    Qualifications

    Individuals who are selected and prepared for a supervisory role must have the skills, knowledge, and dispositions of highly accomplished professions to fulfill their responsibilities. Most university supervisors are faculty members; however in program areas with large numbers of interns such as elementary and middle grades, adjuncts are hired. Each program area within the College of Education identifies university supervisors who meet the following criteria:

    1. A university supervisor must demonstrate thorough knowledge of public education and the various agencies involved in teacher education and be capable of developing productive working relationships with interns, clinical teachers and all other persons involved in the teacher education process.
    2. A university supervisor must demonstrate superior knowledge of both the subject matter and methodology of teaching.
    3. A university supervisor must hold valid licensure as required by the State of North Carolina for any university methods faculty working with interns in any teacher education program.
    4. A university supervisor must participate in staff development opportunities for clinical teachers and university supervisors as developed and agreed upon by the College of Education, their program area department, and the Latham Clinical Schools Network.
    5. A university supervisor must be willing to follow all procedures set forth by the Office of Educator Preparation and enter all required documentation/information in the electronic system by due dates.
    Major Responsibilities

    University supervisors have three main responsibilities. First, they assist and evaluate interns. As part of the evaluation process, they conduct an initial visit, observe four lessons, score the intern’s portfolio, complete a disposition form and prepare a final evaluation report. Throughout the semester they review planning documentation and read reflective assignments. They listen to intern’s ideas and concerns, make suggestions, and provide feedback.

    They also have the responsibility to support the clinical teacher’s work with the intern. They communicate regularly, explain program procedures and expectations, and respond to questions and concerns.

    Finally, the university supervisor serves as a liaison between the school and the college, interacting with university personnel, school administrators and all those involved in the internship process.

    ECU cannot confirm whether any of its courses or programs meet requirements for professional licensure outside of the State of North Carolina. ECU strongly encourages students to contact applicable licensing boards in states they wish to pursue licensure prior to seeking admission or beginning study in an academic program.
