Admissions


The Educational Specialist (EdS) degree in Educational Administration and Supervision is a sixth-year, post master’s degree requiring a minimum of 36 semester hours completed entirely online. Program studies are adapted for the challenges encountered by superintendents, but also unique school district roles, such as personnel administrator, curriculum supervisor and/or directors of special programs. Students select from the following concentrations: (1) Superintendent, (2) Dual Language Immersion Administration or (3) both Superintendent and Dual Language Immersion Administration.

Upon completion of the program, individuals are eligible to upgrade previously held NC Professional Educator licenses. Individuals holding administration license (012, class P) are eligible for administrator II license (012, class AP) and superintendent license (011, class AS). Individuals holding supervision license (113, class S) are eligible for curriculum-instructional specialist II license (113, class AS).

Requirements

Candidates for the EdS program must have a minimum of:

  • A master’s degree in an education-related area
  • 3 years of proven educational leadership and/or supervisor experience

Program Details

Credit hours required: 36 hours (12 courses – 3 credit hours each)
Start of program: Students may begin the program during any semester
Length of time to complete degree: 2 years
Delivery method: 100% online
Tuition: approximately $10,440. Distance education tuition rate is $290 per credit hour
Schedule: students take 2 courses per semester
ECU EdS to EdD Pathway: If interested in the EdD program at ECU, students must first successfully complete the EdS degree. Interested individuals complete the EdD application process and will be evaluated with the pool of applicants. If accepted to the EdD, 27 credit hours from the EdS will be applied toward the EdD.

Application and Admission Information

All application materials must be processed through the ECU Graduate school using the online process. The application is available on the Graduate School website.
The following are required as part of the admission process:

  • Online Application – located under the Doctoral Programs tab on the Graduate School website (Educational Administration and Supervision, EdS)
  • Application Fee – $75, payable when submitting application online
  • Transcripts – Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended within the last 5 years and anywhere a degree was earned. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted. All documents must be submitted directly to ECU from the institution. ECU will accept both paper and electronic transcripts. Electronic transcripts from your institution may be sent to the Graduate School via the following email address: gradschool@ecu.edu or mailing address:

  • NC Professional Educator’s License(s) – Upload a copy of your current North Carolina educator’s license(s). Candidates for the EdS program must have a master’s degree in school leadership (012 Principal and/or 113 Curriculum Instructional Specialist) and evidence of successful school and/or school district leadership experience (SP 2 license).
  • Statement of Purpose – Describe your motivation for pursuing the EdS and how it will help you achieve your long-term professional goals.
  • Three Recommendation Letters – Submit the names and email address of 3 professional references (one must be from current evaluator/supervisor).
  • Resume – Upload your current resume highlighting school/school system or organizational leadership experience (i.e., principal, assistant principal, central office).
