Second Degree

The Second Degree pathway to teaching is for candidates who have a degree from a regionally accredited university and want to earn a second degree before they obtain a teaching job.  ECU has several second degree options with all of our programs being Main Campus with the exception of Birth through Kindergarten/Family and Consumer Sciences that has a distance education option.

For candidates that are seeking a fast track option, we encourage them to consider our ECU Residency option which would require obtaining a NC public or NC public charter school lead teaching position and working on coursework while in the teaching role.

How does a Second Degree work?

A student who currently holds a baccalaureate degree may enroll in a second baccalaureate degree program. The student must meet the curriculum requirements for the second undergraduate degree in the catalog under which they enter or in some subsequent catalog and must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours in enrollment at ECU. In evaluating curriculum requirements for the second undergraduate degree, the academic unit offering the second degree will determine whether general education requirements from the first undergraduate degree satisfy general education requirements for the second degree. However, any foreign language requirements for the second degree must be fully met and may not be waived. All second undergraduate degree students will be required to complete one writing-intensive course in the major. The amount of coursework required for a student’s second degree will be dependent on which coursework from their first undergraduate degree is degree-applicable to the student’s second degree.
