Mathematics Education
All Elementary Education and Special Education majors take one three-hour Foundations Curriculum mathematics course from the Department of Mathematics and 8-10 hours of mathematics education from the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education. The course work is as follows:

Course Descriptions
MATH 1065: College Algebra. 1 hour of lecture and 3 hours of active learning in the computer lab each week. May not be taken by students who have credit for MATH 1083 or higher. Prerequisite: Appropriate score on departmental math placement test or math section of the SAT/ACTor a minimum grade of C-(1.7) in MATH 0001 or MATH 0045. Topics include linear equations, quadratic equations, systems of linear equations, inequalities, circles, variation, functions, graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions, and applications, Students not attending on the first day of class will be dropped.
MATE 2129 – Investigations into Concepts of Elementary Mathematics(2). Investigations in geometry, measurement, and data.
MATE 3050 – Mathematics and Methods for Pre-K-2nd. Prerequisite: MATH 2127 or general education mathematics course; RP: MATE 2129; C: MATE 3051. Mathematics of the Pre-K-2 classroom including growth and development of students’ mathematical knowledge and mathematics teaching practice with emphasis on curriculum, instruction, and eliciting and responding to student strategies.
MATE 3051 – Field Experience in Mathematics Grades K-2. P: MATH 2127 or general education mathematics course; RP: MATE 2129; C: MATE 3050. Supervised practicum in a K-2 math setting. Focus on understanding and eliciting student thinking within a student-centered math lesson.
MATE 3060 – Mathematical Modeling for Elementary Grades (3).Capstone for elementary mathematics concentration. Prerequisite: MATH 2127, MATE 2129 ; RP: MATE 3030 , MATE 3067.
