What do you love about ECU?

The culture and community that exists in the College of Education. The commitment of faculty to ensuring that the next generation of educators are both empowered and motivated for success. The passion of our students and their increasing commitment to the field of education.

What are your research interests?

Representations in Mathematics Teaching and Learning, Technology, and Students’ Mathematical Thinking

What is your favorite course that you have taught or currently teach?

I’ll have to say Technology in Mathematics Education for undergraduate courses and Leadership in Mathematics Education for graduate courses.

What drew you to MSITE and, in particular, mathematics education?

For one I’ll say the faculty. MSITE has a strong presence of mathematics educators with expertise in elementary, middle school, high school, and collegiate mathematics. Faculty members hold leadership positions in both the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators – in North Carolina. Having faculty who understand the state of NC as well as have degrees from leading institutions within and outside the state not only helps in the strength of the courses offered in the program but also in research collaborations with other educators.

Another will be the unique array and nature of courses offered by the mathematics education program.  At the undergraduate level, mathematics education offers courses for the BS Mathematics Education (MATE) major and concentrations in elementary mathematics and middle grades mathematics. At the Graduate level, there are three concentrations; two of the concentrations are online. An online elementary mathematics certificate supports the development of mathematics leaders at the elementary level and does so by pooling faculty recourses across four UNC System universities. Faculty teach both content and methods courses for all three areas at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels.

Outside of work, what are your favorite hobbies or interests?

I enjoy traveling and exploring new cultures. I also enjoy playing basketball.
