Spring 2025 Graduate: Chayla Miller

Name: Chayla Miller
Major/Degree Program: Elementary Education with concentration in Mathematics (bachelor’s degree)
Hometown/Current City: New Bern, NC
Hobbies/interests: I love to thrift, listen to music, watch movies/shows and spend time with my friends doing anything.
What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?: My favorite memories would be any from when I spent my time with my friends from the Quest Living Learning Community when I first came to ECU.
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?: I would say that the inspiration came when I was born. I have always wanted to be a teacher from a little girl. That is why I went into Elementary Education.
Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?: Other than God, I would say Mrs. Jennifer Adams, Dr. Julie Stanley and Nichelle Shuck have made the biggest impact in my journey here. They have taught me a lot, and I look up to them.
What’s next after graduation?: I will be working on my master’s degree in School Counseling and working.
What advice would you give to future College of Education students?: It is not as hard as it seems! Instead of looking at all you have to do, break your lesson planning, assignments and work into pieces and you will get through it. You will pass everything during this degree if you try your best, make connections and go to class!
How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step?): College of Education has taught me all I needed to know for the classroom. For example, since the first year i was here there has not been a time where I was not already in a classroom. I think the gradual release of the practicums on top of the classes and real-life scenarios they give us in class has been very beneficial and helps not to be as nervous when you are preparing for internship and your own classroom.
From Nichelle Shuck (CARE Corps/AmeriCorps director): Chayla Miller has served as our first Teaching CARE Corps Member in Tyrrell County. She has successfully established an amazing rapport with our district partners and will complete her 900 hours (half-time AmeriCorps term) and will be pursuing a master’s degree in counseling at ECU in the fall 🙂
