Ortega-Guerrero receives prestigious Mitchell-Buck Scholarship
Hispanic Studies Education major Mariel Ortega-Guerrero has been awarded the Mitchell-Buck Scholarship by the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina.
This is the second time in the last five years that a major in our Foreign Language Educator Preparation Program has received this prestigious scholarship from our state’s professional association. This is a special honor for ECU because one of the language professors that this scholarship was named for was a professor at ECU and because FLANC awards this scholarship to only one student in their last year in a foreign language educator preparation program across the state.
Each year, the Jane Mitchell-Manolita Buck Scholarship honors Jane Mitchell (French, UNC-Greensboro) and Manolita Buck (Spanish, ECU), two language educators instrumental in shaping a vision for world language education in our state. Dr. Mary Lynn Redmond established the scholarship in 1996 upon the retirement of Mitchell and Buck. The scholarship awards $1,000 to a student entering his or her final year of study in a program leading to teaching licensure in a world language in North Carolina. This scholarship is open to all students of any North Carolina institute of higher learning.
Mitchell-Buck scholars can be enrolled at any college or university in North Carolina, and must be in their final year at the time the scholarship is awarded. You can learn more about FLANC awards here: https://www.flanc.org/members/awards
