Dr. Ben Blaisdell gives keynote address at Sheffield Hallam University in England

On July 9, 2018, Dr. Ben Blaisdell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education, Foundations and Research, gave the invited keynote address at the launch of the Race Staff Network at Sheffield Hallam University in Sheffield, England. His talk, “Racial Spaces Analysis: Examining White Supremacy and Antiblackness in Daily Practice,” focused on how racial spaces analysis can be used in a collaborative research and professional approach called equity coaching. Racial spaces analysis examines the spatial and racial practices and discourses that normalize institutional forms of racism. When used in an equity coaching approach, it can help researchers work with teachers, administrators, and university personnel to develop the racial literacy necessary to examine the daily manifestations of racism. It can also help to analyze and counteract the discourse often used to resist school and university-based racial equity efforts.
