Counselor education program collaborates with AMEXCAN to provide college readiness tips
ECU Counselor Education faculty and students collaborating with the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN) in Greenville to provide education about college readiness to the community.
East Carolina University’s Counselor Education Program is collaborating with the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN) and this summer its students are working on a service learning project entitled, “Education Academy for Latino Parents and Students in North Carolina.”
On May 19 and June 2, Dr. Syntia Santos-Dietz and her students visited the central office of AMEXCAN in Greenville and interacted with the local community. On May 19 students participated in a day with Latin American families in the region, observing and listening to guest speakers from Pitt County Schools and Pitt Community College who shared information about admissions. On June 2, counselor education program students led sessions and shared information about career and college readiness, including building a profile, interviewing, and creating a resume.

The counselor education program experienced a productive day working with Latino families (10 parents, 6 children, and 11 adolescents). It proved a wonderful local immersion, learning, and service experience for the students and faculty.
