ECU College of Education hosts spring Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute
The East Carolina University College of Education hosted the spring 2018 Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Holiday Inn in Greenville, NC. The Institute provides ongoing professional development focusing on best practices in literacy. Participants included literacy leaders and educators from the Latham Clinical Schools Network, a privately funded partnership program that supports the enhancement of 43 school systems in eastern North Carolina, as well as ECU students and faculty.
The Margaret Blount Harvey Institutes are possible through the generosity of the late Felix and Margaret Blount Harvey, and daughters Leigh McNairy and Sunny Burrows. Dr. Johna Faulconer, an ECU College of Education Associate Professor in Reading Education and Director of the Margaret Blount Harvey Institutes, opened the session by encouraging participants to continue to be literacy advocates in schools and in their communities.
Dr. Lester Laminack, the featured presenter, has dedicated himself to the literacy community as an educator, full-time writing consultant, and member of the National Council of Teachers of English.
“Mr. Laminack was highly motivational. He provided rock-solid information that is helpful to teachers,” one participant said. Another participate said, “Spending my Saturday under the teaching of Lester has been the absolute most worthwhile activity I could have done! His ability to remind, inform, and entertain is priceless!”
Faulconer noted that participants left the institute feeling both excited and inspired.
