Making the Most of Campus Time with our Distance Education SECU Partnership East Students

In December, the College of Education welcomed the return of the SECU Partnership East Virtual Full-time Elementary 5 cohort for their second visit to campus following their Orientation in May. These full time distance education students spent the morning with their advisor prior to their Upper Division Interview with faculty. The remainder of the day was devoted to resources and recreation at ECU’s Teaching Resources Center (TRC) located on the second floor of Joyner Library.

While at the TRC, the students explored the variety of resources available to them as Distance Education students with many available by mail at no cost to the student (return postage included). Established in 1988, the resources are deep at the TRC including: children and young adult materials, K-12 North Carolina state adopted textbooks, multi-media, kits, and reference resources.

The highlight of their time on campus may have been the “Make and Take” activities created in the TRC Ann Rhem Schwarzmann Production Center. The center is designed to assist in the preparation of materials used in lesson units, classrooms, and presentations. They created student buttons, bulletin board items for their future classrooms, and Pirate bookmarks that will serve as gifts to the students that they worked with this fall in their clinical experience in the North Carolina public schools.

The students returned to their homes and communities across the state of North Carolina and look forward to their next visit to campus in August, it will be a day of informative seminars to prepare them for their Internship I semester.

SECU Partnership East involves a partnership between East Carolina University, North Carolina community colleges, and public school systems. Students can pursue degrees in elementary education, middle grades education, and special education general curriculum. The degrees are offered in a part-time format for all 3 degrees with full-time options available for elementary education. To qualify, students must have prerequisite coursework from a North Carolina community college as well as meet testing and grade requirements.
