Glenesha Berryman named Outstanding First-Year Student by Phi Kappa Phi
Glenesha Berryman, an EC Scholar and member of the Honors College, has been recognized by the ECU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society, as the Outstanding First-Year Student for 2015-2016.
She was awarded a plaque and a check for $500 from the chapter at the annual initiation ceremony on Sunday, April 11, 2016. Berryman is from a military family and the first in her family to attend college. She made the journey to ECU from Seoul, South Korea, where she finished high school.
Berryman is pursuing a BS degree in English Education in the College of Education and a major in English with the Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. She has a passion for leadership, international relations and education advocacy and has been involved with the Honors College Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement. She is public relations chair for She’s the First, which promotes the education of girls in developing nations, and works with ALMAS, a group that teaches English to Latino community members.
This past year she started a food drive in the Honors College that led to the collection of 500 pounds of non-perishables for homeless veterans in eastern North Carolina. She is also helping to launch Pirate Peers Advocating for Learning to match ECU students in a tutoring and mentoring program for elementary school students.
Berryman also excels in the classroom having earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average. This summer, she will travel to Austin, Texas, for a summer teaching fellowship with the Breakthrough Collaborative.
