Flood to Address Resegregation
Greenville, NC – Dr. Dudley Flood, former school principal, teacher, coach, and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction administrator, will speak at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Mendenhall Student Center about the disturbing resegregation trend emerging in public schools. The event will be held in Room 1 and is open to the public at no charge.
Flood is currently a lecturer and consultant. He retired in 1990 as associate state superintendent of education before going to work as executive director of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators until 1996.
More than half a century has passed since the US Supreme Court ruled that Southern school segregation was unconstitutional and “inherently unequal,” yet research shows that separation between races is more disparate today in our schools than 50 years ago
This resegregation is happening despite the nation’s growing diversity, in particular the rapid expansion in the Latino student population, and is contributing to a growing gap in quality between the schools being attended by white students and those serving a large proportion of minority students.
Flood will also speak to the ECU Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) at Brook Valley Country Club that evening at 6 p.m. Tickets for this event are $15 and include dinner and gratuity.
