What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?

Being accepted into the upper division was a turning point for me.  Being accepted made me feel that my goal of becoming a teacher was real and achievable. My second favorite memory at ECU was attending the field trip to the USS North Carolina in Wilmington with Dr. Stanley, Dr. Huffman, and Dr. Friddle. During this experience, we stepped into the role of our future students by planning a field trip, creating a scavenger hunt, and learning through hands-on exploration of historical artifacts.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

The short answer is I want students to feel proud of themselves. I believe that everyone has a right to an education and one that will empower them to go after their dreams even if they are the first to do so, like myself.  I want to create a classroom where students feel capable, supported, and excited to learn!

Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?

Dr. Julie Stanley has made the biggest impact on my journey at ECU. As a first-generation college student like myself, she has been a constant source of inspiration and support. Coming into college, I sometimes felt like an imposter and wasn’t sure what to expect, but seeing everything she has accomplished reminded me that I belong here and can achieve my goals.

What’s next after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to move to Littleton, North Carolina where I have accepted an elementary teaching position at Littleton Academy.

What advice would you give to future College of Education students?

Never be afraid to ask for help. The educators at ECU truly want to see you succeed and will support you every step of the way, you just have to take that first step and ask.

How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step)?

The College of Education has fully prepared me for my future classroom. Through my coursework, field experiences, and student teaching, I have gained the skills and confidence needed to be successful both inside and outside the classroom. As a first-generation college student, I am especially grateful for the support, guidance, and opportunities ECU has provided. My time here has shaped me into the educator I am today, and I will carry these experiences with me throughout my career.
