What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?
Moving into my very first college apartment was easily my favorite memory at ECU. I had just transferred after a tough experience at my previous university and a year back at home, so that moment meant everything to me. It felt like a fresh start. A second chance to finally experience the college life I had been hoping for.
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
Back in high school, when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do, I had this small feeling that teaching “might be nice.” I mentioned it to my English teacher, and the first thing she said was how low the pay is, so as a 16-year-old, I immediately crossed it off my list. Later on, I actually received a full-ride scholarship for education… and still turned it down. I tried nursing and didn’t like it, then switched to economics and struggled through statistics. One day, while driving back to my previous university in Charlotte, I saw a billboard about ECU’s online education program. At that moment, it just clicked. It felt like a gentle reminder of where I was meant to be. I can honestly say I don’t regret it at all. Being an educator makes me feel like I’ve won the life lottery, and that’s worth way more than a big paycheck.
Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?
God, without a doubt. Transferring here was a huge change, and there were times I felt really unsure of myself. I went through some hard moments, but they taught me so much about perseverance and trusting that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I truly don’t think I would’ve made it through without staying close to God. He reminded me of my purpose and showed me that I’m capable of stepping into this role and making an impact.
What’s next after graduation?
Going straight into teaching!!!
What advice would you give to future College of Education students?
There’s going to be a point where everything feels overwhelming and like you have way too much on your plate. When that happens, focus on what matters most—your student teaching experience. That’s the part that will stick with you. Believe me when I say it’s the most rewarding “assignment” you’ll ever do, especially when you feel like you have nothing left to give but still show up for your students.
How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step)?
I really loved how much time we actually spent in the classroom. There’s no better way to learn than just being in that environment and getting real experience. I’m also super grateful for professors who stay up to date with how students are changing. Because of that, we’ve learned how to actually connect with students and meet their needs, not just teach them.
