As a three-time Pirate, I fully embrace all things ECU! When I’m not cheering on purple and gold, you can find me spending time with my family, traveling, planting flowers, enjoying time on the river, or relaxing by the pool.
What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?
My favorite memory was successfully defending my dissertation alongside a cohort of dedicated educators. That moment represented years of hard work, growth, and collaboration, and it was incredibly meaningful to celebrate that milestone with peers and faculty who supported me along the way.
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
I have always been passionate about teaching, learning, and making a difference in the lives of others, so I was naturally drawn to a career where I could positively impact others through education. Over time, that passion grew into a commitment not only to impact students directly, but also to support teachers and strengthen instructional practices at a systems level, ensuring all students have access to high-quality learning experiences.
Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?
Dr. Elizabeth Hodge has made a tremendous impact on my journey. Her guidance, support, and commitment to excellence challenged me to think deeply about my work and pushed me to grow as both a scholar and a leader.
What’s next after graduation?
I plan to continue serving in district leadership, using the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to strengthen curriculum, instruction, and professional learning across NC Public Schools. I am especially focused on building teacher capacity to strengthen student engagement and achievement, with the goal of pursuing a future role as a Chief Academic Officer or Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.
What advice would you give to future College of Education students?
Stay committed to your purpose and be open to growth. The journey can be challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Build strong relationships, lean on your support system, and remember that the work you are doing has a direct impact on students and educators.
How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step)?
The College of Education has prepared me to lead with purpose and make data-informed decisions that positively impact teaching and learning. Through my doctoral work, I developed a deeper understanding of research-based practices, continuous improvement processes, and instructional leadership, all of which I will continue to apply in my endeavor to support teachers and students.
