Name:

Skyler Kinion

Major/Degree Program:

I am a senior pursuing a double major in History and History Education.

Hometown/Current City:

I am originally from Williamston, North Carolina.

Hobbies/Interests:

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, attending church and Campus Christian Fellowship (CCF), going to ECU football games, and gardening—especially caring for my roses at home.

What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?

Throughout the past four years, I have created many meaningful memories that I will always cherish. One of my favorites was attending the ECU vs. Memphis football game with my friends. Experiencing such an exciting game and singing the Alma Mater together one last time before graduation, following a Pirate victory, was truly unforgettable.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

My decision to pursue a career in education was inspired by the teachers who positively impacted my own educational journey. They created supportive and engaging learning environments that fostered my love for the classroom. Additionally, I come from a family of educators. As a third-generation Pirate educator, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication, perseverance, and commitment required both inside and outside the classroom.

Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?

I would not be where I am today without the unwavering support of my parents. They have consistently encouraged and prepared me for every opportunity I have pursued. Their guidance has instilled in me the values of hard work, dedication, selflessness, and pride in being a Pirate.

What’s next after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school to continue my studies in History, with the goal of teaching at the post-secondary level.

What advice would you give to future College of Education students?

I would encourage future students in the College of Education to find a strong community to support them throughout their college experience. At ECU, I found that community in CCF, which became an essential source of encouragement during the challenges of college, student teaching, and completing the edTPA. Being part of this group has not only supported me but has also helped me learn how to support and care for others.

How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step)?

The College of Education has prepared me effectively by providing early and consistent opportunities to engage in real classroom settings. Beginning in my sophomore year, I was able to observe and learn from experienced teachers. In conversations with peers from other institutions, many do not receive this level of hands-on experience until their senior year. This early exposure has allowed me to develop practical skills, observe diverse teaching strategies, and gain confidence in my readiness for the profession.
