What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?

Meeting new people & forming new friendships 

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

Most people can identify a teacher who positively influenced their lives. While I have been fortunate to learn from many exceptional educators, the person who most inspired my path was one who held a negative perception of me.

In first grade, I struggled with reading. My teacher treated me poorly and regarded me as a burden rather than a student with potential. She told my parents that I was a “failure” who would “never amount to anything.” Rather than discouraging me, that experience shaped my determination to become an educator. I believed that by becoming a teacher, I could help ensure that more students experience encouragement, support, and belief in their potential. 

Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?

My journey here has been shaped by the unwavering support of my family, as well as the mentorship of Dr. Howard and Dr. Savitz.

My family has been my foundation throughout this process. They have consistently encouraged me, believed in my abilities, and supported me throughout the challenges of graduate school. Their patience, understanding, and constant reassurance gave me the confidence and motivation to keep moving forward, even during the most stressful times.

At the start of graduate school, Dr. Howard consistently reassured and encouraged me, always responding to my many questions with kindness and support. More recently, Dr. Savitz has guided me through the final stage of my program, helping me polish my skills and develop into an even more effective educator through her academic guidance and mentorship.

What’s next after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to take some well-deserved time to rest and recharge, then move forward by pursuing a doctoral program in education.

What advice would you give to future College of Education students?

Teaching is challenging but deeply rewarding. There will be days when you feel overwhelmed, but don’t give up. Remember your purpose and trust that you chose this path for a reason.

How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step)?

As a graduate in Reading and Literacy, the College of Education has prepared me with the knowledge and skills to assess reading needs, provide targeted literacy instruction, and support diverse learners. It has given me a strong foundation to help students grow as confident readers and lifelong learners.
