Schaefer discusses importance of study abroad

East Carolina University alumna Allison Schaefer dove into study abroad experiences headfirst.
During her time as an undergraduate and graduate science education student, Schaefer went on three trips with Dr. Tammy Lee and Bonnie Glass in the science education program.
“Studying abroad through the College of Education was the most memorable part of my college experience. Each trip pushed me in completely different ways, but every time I came back more confident, more self-aware, and more comfortable stepping outside of my comfort zone,” she said. “Whether it was snorkeling in vibrant blue waters, learning about species diversity, or exploring conservation efforts involving macaws, sea turtles, and monkeys, each experience blended education with adventure. The history, culture, and hands-on learning created memories that will last a lifetime.”
Schaefer traveled to Ireland, Belize and Spain with fellow education students. Her trip to Ireland was her first time ever leaving the United States.
“While it was intimidating at first, learning the country’s history and seeing how much it has changed inspired me to keep saying yes to new opportunities,” she said. “That first trip taught me how powerful it can be to take a leap even when you’re scared. I went in unsure of myself and came back excited to explore more of the world and more of who I could become.”

During her subsequent trips to Belize and Spain, Schaefer leaned into the experience fully. The jungles of Belize pushed her physically and mentally, but provided an excellent learning opportunity on how you can get comfortable being uncomfortable.
“My final study abroad experience in Mallorca felt like the perfect way to end my journey,” she said. “We immersed ourselves in the culture, history, and conservation. I remember one hike in particular, that was way longer and a lot more challenging than expected, ended with a view I’ll never forget. All I could do was laugh and be so amazed that I got there, and honored that I was able to be in such a beautiful country.”
