What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?
I am part of the Partnership Teach program. Much of my experience has been online, but my favorite memory is from before my cohort’s first semester when we all met on campus. We spent the day getting to know one another and learning about the program.
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
I have always enjoyed working with children. When my kids started school, I became a teacher assistant while living in South Carolina. After moving to North Carolina a few years later, I had the same desire to be a teacher assistant. Since the requirements differ between states, I took some time to decide what was best for my family and me, ultimately working as a preschool teacher. I loved working with preschoolers, but I missed the elementary classroom. After taking a few classes at South Piedmont Community College, I was able to transfer to East Carolina University.
Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?
Without a doubt, Karli Ruscoe! Ms. Ruscoe has been incredibly helpful throughout this journey. She is a phenomenal advisor who genuinely cares for every student that crosses her path. She regularly checks in on us and always asks how she can help. Her guidance has meant so much to me and has kept me motivated during tough times.
What’s next after graduation?
I hope to receive a job offer in a K-2 classroom, but I would be grateful for any opportunity.
What advice would you give to future College of Education students?
Engage with your teachers! They are there to help you and want the best for you. Ask questions and ensure you make the most of your time at ECU.
How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step)?
The Partnership Teach program is excellent for distance education students. I feel that this program and the College of Education have equipped me with the necessary material and content knowledge from my classes. Additionally, the practicum hours and student teaching experience have been invaluable, providing knowledge on teaching methods, differentiation, lesson planning, and the various subjects I will be teaching.
From Karli Ruscoe (instructional consultant with Partnership Teach): Stacey is an Elementary Education major completing her coursework online through Partnership Teach. She is on track to graduate this spring (2025). She currently holds a 3.72 GPA with ECU while maintaining a full-time online courseload. She has been able to maintain her strong academic standing while raising a family and navigating life challenges (mother in hospice, father with cancer, loss of father-in-law, etc.). Her University Supervisor describes her as “proactive” and an “outstanding intern” having “a great rapport with her school community and students”. However, for me, it will always be her grace that I will remember. From one life challenge to another, she met each with gentle grace. When errors were made by ECU personnel, she again handled it with professionalism and grace. The Pirate Nation is stronger for having Stacey in it! I am proud of her and recommend her for consideration.
