Name: Katie Dugan

Major/Degree Program: Elementary Education

Hometown/Current City: Frederick, Maryland (Hometown)

Hobbies/interests: I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, grabbing coffee, hanging out by the pool and trips to the beach!

What’s your favorite memory from your time at ECU?: My favorite memory from my time at ECU is definitely when I studied abroad my sophomore year through ECU Tuscany’s program. I was able to explore other cultures, meet new people, and get out of my comfort zone!

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?: I have always had a passion for caring for children, and as I got older and began to take Child Development courses in high school, I realized I had an even greater love for teaching. I decided to pursue a degree in Elementary Education because I hope to create a classroom environment where every child that walks through my door feels loved, valued, and confident in their abilities. I think every child deserves an education and deserves to feel safe and comfortable in their schooling, and I hope I can provide all of these things for my future students.

Who has made the biggest impact on your journey here?: Dr. Adams has made a significant impact on my journey over the past 4 years here at ECU. I have been lucky enough to have her as my professor for many of my education courses. She has always pushed me to be the best educator I can be, and I am so thankful for her support! I would also say that my Clincal Teacher Ms. Carr, at the ECU Community School has had a huge impact on my experience here. She has taught me so much about the art of teaching and she has been there for me every step of the way during my internship. I am going to miss her and my students dearly!

What’s next after graduation?: After graduation, I plan on moving back home to Frederick, Maryland. I am hoping to begin my first-year teaching in a 2nd grade classroom.

What advice would you give to future College of Education students?: To future College of Education students, I would say never be afraid to ask questions! This is a learning experience for YOU, and I would advise you to take advantage and ask away! There will be some difficult times, but always remember your why, and your passion for teaching.

How has the College of Education prepared you for the classroom (or your next step?): The courses offered at ECU and the amazing faculty and staff that support you will teach you everything you need to know, and more! ECU’s College of Education provides students with so many different resources and opportunities to help grow you as a student, and as a future educator. Through my practicum experiences, and student teaching, I feel more than ready to have a classroom of my own and be the best educator for my students!

From Jennifer Adams (master teaching instructor in elementary education): Ms. Dugan is an intern at the Community School. She has become an integral part of the classroom where she is interning. She has developed a rapport with her teacher, students, parents, and other staff at the school. Ms. Dugan is active in the school community attending many outside events along with meetings with her clinical teacher. Ms. Dugan’s time in the classroom has proved beneficial as she continues to make a difference in the lives of the students. Her knowledge of the curriculum and the strategies needed to engage the students are sound and research-based. Overall, Ms. Katie Dugan has been a devoted student in the Elementary Education program throughout her time at ECU. She has continued to impress as her education has moved to the internship classroom.
