Participants of DES collected and analyzed fossils from the Aurora Fossil museum. In addition they also collected and analyzed water samples, rocks, and fossils from Green Mill Run: Green Springs Park and River Park North in Greenville and Pamlico River in Washington. The DES participants used water samplers, Vernier Talking 2 Lab-quest devices and probes, talking tape measures, Ruby magnifiers and other assistive technologies and modified accommodations to conduct their laboratory investigations. Participants were Raquan Craig, Grace Berry, Shane Harris Jr, and Owen Muir. DES program activities were led by Dr. Rhea Miles in the Department of Mathematics Education, Science Education and Instructional Technology Education and Dr. Alex Manda in the Department of Geological Sciences, Mrs. Klara Higgins science teacher in the Pitt County Schools Early College Program on the ECU campus, and Grace Jinks, speech and pathology major at UNC Greensboro. The DES program is a grant funded project by the Burroughs Wellcome fund-SSEP.
