Why did you choose to become an educator?

I chose to become an educator because of my love for learning and desire to help others. My parents, Ralph V. Cole, Sr. and Joyce B. Cole, were educators in Edenton, North Carolina. I watched them work diligently to help others for over 40 years. Their love for learning and desire to help others succeed fueled my passion for education.

What do you love about ECU?

I love ECU because of its caring and compassionate faculty and staff. I have earned two graduate degrees from Pirate Nation. With each degree, the faculty and staff members went above and beyond to ensure that I had quality learning experiences and was prepared to meet the challenges ahead. Additionally, upon completion of each degree, faculty members would follow-up with me to check on my progress, offer an encouraging word, and inquire if there is anything that they could do to further to support my efforts. ECU was simply the best!

What advice or words of wisdom would you share with a future educator?

I would offer future educators the following advice: Commit to continued learning. Be flexible. Be creative. Practice self-care. Give your very best each and every because you may be a child’s best hope.
