Why did you choose to become an educator?

As I reflect on my childhood, I realized that I was born to be an educator. I was the child that gathered all of my friends and family members and taught them various things such as how to properly brush their teeth. Later on in life, I discovered my love for art. This drove my decision to become an art educator at East Carolina University. During my freshman year, I decided that working with upper elementary students was my real passion.

What do you love about ECU?

East Carolina University helped this small town girl grow up into adulthood. ECU was not far from my hometown yet far enough for me to experience life. I love ECU because I met various people from different backgrounds and we became family. Being the youngest of six siblings, I discovered my need to embrace others within my age range.

What advice or words of wisdom would you share with a future educator?

The advice I would give to a future educator is remember your passion. I did not realize my passion until I decided to become an educator. That is when I remembered my desire to educate others as a young child. Learning was my love language — is it still is. That is why I chose to teach others how to learn.
