Pitt County Schools started the program as part of a nationwide effort to “Grow Your Own” educator initiatives to combat teacher shortages.

The four students selected for the scholarship are:

  • Christopher Murray, a first-year music education major from J.H. Rose High School
  • Meghan Pratt, a first-year special education major from Farmville Central High School
  • Kevin Payton, a junior elementary education major from D.H. Conley High School
  • Lexi Lozner, a sophomore special education major from D.H. Conley High School

All four of the recipients are also the children of Pitt County educators and saw, from an early age, everything that teaching involved.

The scholarship is modeled off of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program, which requires students to teach in North Carolina for a specific amount of time. For the Pitt County program, students must teach in Pitt County one year for every $5,000 in funding they receive.
