Dr. Phyllis Broughton, a teaching assistant professor in adult education, and Courtney Howard, a counselor education graduate student from Washington, NC, led an Educational Research Review session using Dr. Loni Crumb’s article on Underserved but Undeterred:  Single Mother Students’ Experiences at Community College (Spring 2021, Community College Enterprise. v27 n1 p 66-72) with Pitt Community College on Monday, November 22.

The virtual presentation was attended by 15 faculty and Student Services staff.  Courtney Howard presented a summary of the article and facilitated discussion questions with breakout rooms.  One of the outcomes noted from the discussion was to provide more visibility for single mothers (parents) on Pitt Community College’s campus.  As a result of Dr. Crumb’s article and the presentation, Pitt Community College plans to advocate and support the academic persistence of single mother (parent) students at Pitt Community College.
