Counselor Education faculty highlighted in Counseling Today cover story

Black man looking to the sky

Two ECU Counselor Education faculty members’ work into Black mental health was highlighted by Counseling Today.

Two Counselor Education faculty were highlighted in the August 2020 Counseling Today cover story, “Black mental health matters.”

Drs. Janeé Avent Harris and Loni Crumb, assistant professors of counselor education at ECU, examined the negative perceptions of mental illness and treatments among Black Americans. Their research showed that stigma, a lack of trust in mental health care and a mislabeling of Black people’s presenting concerns all led to Black Americans being more apprehensive to seek out counseling.

To read a more detailed discussion of their findings, read their article “African Americans’ perceptions of mental illness and preferences for treatment” in the Journal of Counselor Practice.
