Kappa Delta Pi initiates 21 new members

East Carolina University College of Education’s Eta Chi chapter of Kappa Delta Pi was able to initiate 21 new members this year, albeit in a different format than normal.

This semester, classes were moved to an alternative delivery format beginning Monday, March 23 and campus events were canceled due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. This did not stop the Eta Chi chapter from initiating their newest members.

Drs. Monica Gonzalez and Kristen Gregory, the chapter’s counselors, gave students a two-week window to complete a virtual initiation, ending on April 2. Once they finished that, Drs. Gonzalez and Gregory mailed the purple and green graduation cords, pins, certificates and creeds to the new members.

Kappa Delta Pi was founded by William Bagley, Truman Kelly, and Thomas Edgar Musselman in 1911 at the University of Illinois to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. The society has continued to grow for more than a century with outstanding members such as Albert Einstein, George Washington Carver, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Today, it is an international organization with more than 1.2 million members. The Eta Chi chapter was installed at East Carolina University in May 1953.
