MLS program celebrates Fall 2019 accomplishments

The College of Education’s Master of Library Science program celebrated many faculty and alumni accomplishments during the fall 2019 semester.

Faculty:

Kawanna Bright presents at  American Association for Teaching and Curriculum annual meeting.

Dr. Kawanna Bright presented at the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum annual meeting.

Assistant Professor Kawanna Bright presented “Teaching privilege & equity when you have none” at the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum Annual Meeting. Dr. Bright also co-published the article, “Articulating the experience of “uniqueness and difference” for librarians of color” in The Library Quarterly, 89(4).

Assistant Professor Mónica Colón-Aguirre co-published “A comparative study of perceptions and use of Google Scholar and academic library discovery systems” in College and Research Libraries, 80(6). Dr. Colón-Aguirre co-presented “Are we burned out yet? Librarians experiencing burnout in their careers” at the North Carolina Library Association Biennial Conference and “LatinXs finding informaXion in Boston (LatinXs buscando informaXion en Boston)” at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) in addition to co-presenting the poster, “The latinx literacy in libraries and archives project,” at ALISE

Assistant Professor Africa Hands presented “Bringing it together: Integrating quantitative and qualitative data in mixed methods research” at Library Research Seminar VII.

Professor Al Jones published “From marginalized migrants to permanent residents of North Carolina: How libraries and Latinos are collaborating to build multicultural communities in the Tar Heel State” in North Carolina Libraries, 77(1). Dr. Jones along with Drs. Kaye Dotson and Elaine Yontz (retired) was a recipient of the Ray Moore Award for best article about public librarianship in North Carolina Libraries. Their article, “Public libraries and school libraries: Partnerships to support truth in history,” appeared in volume 76 of the journal. Dr. Jones also served as editor of the NC Books column of North Carolina Libraries.

Teaching Assistant Professor Barbara Marson co-presented “Spreading our wings: ECU MLS Program in the global arena” with Dr. Dotson at ALISE. Dr. Marson also participated in several international endeavors which include serving on the Building Strong Library & Information Science Education Working Group at the International Federation of Library Associations and Instituations (IFLA), attending the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) and collaborating with librarians in Portugal on an upcoming study abroad experience, and meeting with staff at the American Library in Paris to finalize plans for two ECU MLS student summer interns.

Teaching Assistant Professor Fadekemi Oyewusi presented “Helping hurting students move towards a better mental health” at the North Carolina School Library Media Association conference.

Assistant Professor Rita Soulen presented “School library interventions for new teacher resilience” at the North Carolina School Library Media Association conference. This work provides school librarians with a model for mentoring and collaboration with new teachers. Dr. Soulen has a chapter in the recently published book, Social Justice and Cultural Competency: Essential Readings for School Librarians from Libraries Unlimited; presented the paper, “School library SIG-Global learning: The school library as an exploration hub,” at ALISE; and co-presented a poster, “Research up close: Interact with researchers and research about the six shared foundations,” at the Educators of School Librarians (ESLS) SIG at the American Association of School Librarians (AASL).

 

Alumni:

Sedley Abercrombie was presented with the Authors in Schools Educator Award by Bookmarks, a literary arts nonprofit organization and independent bookstore.

Hugh Davis presented “Days in the Lives: Action Research, Local History, and Appreciation for Who We Are” at the North Carolina School Library Media Association conference.

David Miller published “Vignettes of the Vietnam War” in Library Journal, 144(10), 45. Mr. Miller, the director of Farmville Public Library, also broke ground on the new facility.

Heather Seibert co-edited the book, “The Library Workplace Idea Book: Proactive Steps for Positive Change,” from ALA Editions.
