Hidden No More: STEM Women of Color

The Hidden No More: STEM Women of Color event, sponsored by the Morehead planetarium, the NC Science Center, the NC space grant and East Carolina University, Office of Equity and Diversity was held at the ECU Student Center on Wednesday, March 20. The event highlighted the accomplishments of women of color who historically have faced considerable challenges pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Attendees were introduced to people like Ann Vaughan Hammond and Peggy Vaughan, the daughter and daughter in law of Dorothy Vaughan, who was portrayed by Octavia Spencer in the movie Hidden Figures, along with Dr. Rhea Miles the first African American female to earn a PhD in science education from the University of Virginia and the first African American female to earn tenure in science education at East Carolina University.

As a featured speaker for the event, Dr. Miles informed the audience of her journey to develop her expertise as a researcher in science education by responding to the following questions:

  • How do you go about finding mentors or advocates?
  • How do you achieve balance between work-life?
  • Where do you turn for mentorship and advice in your professional career?
  • How would you advise a young female scientist to prepare for an evolving career landscape?

Dr. Miles also shared highlights from her soon to be released children’s book “Adventures of the STEM brothers” which tells the real life story about her father and two uncles who had STEM careers and were role models in her life.
