Representative Farmer-Butterfield Leads Mock Legislative Session with College of Education Scholars
The issues of teacher salaries and class sizes were debated in a mock legislative session with over 40 East Carolina University College of Education students inside the Rivers Building on Monday, Nov. 13. North Carolina Representative Jean Farmer-Butterfield, D-Pitt, Wilson, was invited by the ECU College of Education to lead the mock legislative session covering some of the primary issues facing the education profession in North Carolina.
After a brief explanation of the bill process within the North Carolina General Assembly from Farmer-Butterfield, the students split into two groups to debate the current state of teacher salaries in North Carolina, and at what level of government the decisions on class size requirements should be made.
The exercise was organized to help future teachers understand how to properly and effectively advocate for the issues they care about.
In addition to the students, a few members of the ECU College of Education faculty and staff were present, along with Brenda Jones, a member of the ECU College of Education Professional Advisory Board.
