Dr. Sandra Warren, Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Special Education Foundation and Research, recently served on a plenary panel discussing the role of formative assessment in balanced assessment systems at the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Fall Meeting in Minneapolis, MN. Joining Dr. Warren on the panel were: Dr. Rick Stiggins, Founder & President, Pearson Assessment Training Institute; Dr. Margaret Heritage, Senior Scientist, WestEd; and Dr. Kenji Hakuta, Lee L. Jacks Professor, Stanford University.

During the hour long conversation before 600 meeting participants, Dr. Warren discussed the importance of formative assessment, misconceptions of formative assessment in the United States as compared to other countries, and provided guidance on advancing formative assessment in balanced assessment systems.

Following the panel discussion, ECU alumnae and Pitt County special educators, Julie Brickhouse and Reba Franks, joined Drs. Warren and Heritage via WebEx for a presentation highlighting formative assessment “in action” with learners with significant intellectual disabilities.

The October 26 meeting was hosted by the Council of Chief State School Officers, a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the Bureau of Indian Education and the five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions.

The CCSSO is committed to making sure that all students — regardless of background — participating in nation’s public education system graduate prepared for college, careers and life.
