FaceTime to Fairbanks
Lights dim over 100 students from Meadow Lane Elementary School who sat on the edge of their seats waiting for the image to appear on the SMART Board. Learning through distance education techniques was familiar to Chelsea Sasser who began working on her teaching degree at Wayne Community College and transferred to East Carolina University’s SECU Partnership East online model. Much like Partnership East’s goal to educate prospective teachers from a distance, Ms. Sasser utilized the power of technology to engage her elementary students in a most unique experience. On a warm, sunny day in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the students connected with a -17 degree day in Fairbanks, Alaska. Chelsea, who hoped to engage her students with a part of the country they may never visit, collaborated with faculty from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and her fellow teachers at Meadow Lane to develop lesson plans on these key details – how reindeer feed, techniques for care, and characteristics of their habitat. The event was highly engaging and interactive, and the wide eyes and smiles of Meadow Lane students as reindeer trotted across the screen brought learning to life.
