Fall 2016 Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute
East Carolina University’s College of Education hosted the Fall 2016 Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute on September 24, 2016 for ECU’s Literacy Leaders Board and educators from the Latham Clinical Schools Network, a privately funded partnership program that supports the enhancement of over 40 school systems in eastern North Carolina. The Department of Literacy Studies, English Education and History Education in the College of Education held the conference at the Holiday Inn in Greenville, N.C. Dr. Grant Hayes, Dean of the College of Education welcomed the group with comments on the importance of supporting literacy education.
As an expert and author in the field of literacy, Mr. Kelly Gallagher, delivered the keynote presentation that inspired this year’s theme, A Kaleidoscope of Literacy and Learning. Mr. Gallagher has worked extensively in the literacy
community, honing his craft as a teacher and author dedicated to helping students become better readers and writers.
“The Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute was very informative. Continuing to bring in world class presenters such as Kelly Gallagher is wonderful,” said one participant.
Another participant concurred, ” I loved having Kelly Gallagher, an experience I otherwise would not have had without ECU’s Literacy Institute.”
Attendees also participated in a variety of practitioners’ sessions led by local literacy educators Cameron Hill and Lisa Baker; ECU’s Director of the Teaching Resources Center, Professor Alan Bailey; and, Jen Jones of Hello Literacy.
Participants were engaged and excited and shared the following comments about the event:
“The literacy conference was a wonderful opportunity to gather with like-minded individuals, with the best practices for reaching children as our primary goal.”
“I thought today was an incredibly enriching experience. It was worth every minute of my Saturday.”
“This was such a quality experience that will provide me with a great opportunity to impact learning in my district.”
Dr. Johna Faulconer, Conference Co-Director and Associate Professor in the College of Education said, “Over and over again, participants shared how excited they were to have the opportunity to attend the Margaret Blount Harvey Literacy Institute. We are so thankful for the generous support of the Harvey family and are excited about how this institute is impacting literacy education.”
Dr. Katherine Misulis, Chair of The Department of Literacy Studies, English Education, and History Education commented, “The College of Education is fortunate that through the generosity of Felix and Margaret Harvey and daughters Leigh McNairy and Sunny Burrows, the family’s wishes of providing high quality literacy professional development opportunities for teachers and teachers in training continues to flourish.”
