ECU Mathematics Education well represented at Meredith Mathematics Leadership Institute
A few Pirates invaded Raleigh, NC this past summer for the Meredith Mathematics Leadership Institute (MMLI) on July 26-28. Dr. Charity Cayton, Dr. Maureen Grady, Dr. Ron Preston, and Dr. Katie Schwatz were each invited to share their expertise at the event.(http://www.meredith.edu/academics/schools/natural_and_mathematical_sciences/mathematics/mmsi/leadership-institute-description)
The MMLI is a K-8 professional development opportunity for principals, district supervisors, mathematics coordinators, full-time coaches and lead teachers to come learn about research-based, best practices for the mathematics classroom. The institute includes the session offered in July 2016, as well as a follow-up session in January 2017.
Dr. Cayton’s presentation focused on Encouraging Student Discourse, while Dr. Grady shared how to keep Mathematics as the Authority in Grades 5-8. Dr. Schwartz offered two sessions, Developing Vision for Mathematics Teaching and Supporting the Mathematics Teaching of Beginning and Student Teachers. Meanwhile, Dr. Preston served double duty – representing Mathematics Education at ECU and as the President of the North Carolina Council Teachers of Mathematics – for his session, Advocacy for Mathematics Teaching and Learning through NCCTM.
