Co-Planning and Co-Teaching: Coast to coast
Dr. Charity Cayton and Dr. Maureen Grady spent much of their summer co-planning and co-teaching from the East Coast to the West Coast. They began in Atlanta, GA in June, where they presented six co-planning strategies at the Annual Conference for the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership (http://mte-partnership.com/). These strategies were developed at East Carolina University in conjunction with two other Mathematics Education colleagues, Dr. Ron Preston and Dr. Rose Sinicrope.
In July, their travels then took them to the University of South Florida in Tampa to work with Dr. Ruthmae Sears and the Helios STEM Middle School Residency Program (http://www.usf.edu/education/research/anchin/teacher-initiatives/preservice-teachers/helios-ms-stem-residency.aspx). They were joined by Dr. Patti Brosnan (Ohio State University) to conduct a one-day workshop for co-planning and co-teaching with clinical teachers and interns for middle grades math and science.
They ended their summer travels in August on the West Coast where they worked with Dr. Jennifer Oloff-Lewis and the Residency in Secondary Education program (http://www.csuchico.edu/soe/rise/) at California State University-Chico. Here they worked with secondary clinical teachers and residents on implementing the six co-planning strategies mentioned above. They also spent a second day working exclusively with mathematics clinical teachers and residents. Everyone had a great time working on high cognitive demand tasks and focusing on facilitating mathematical discourse.
