Oldest Living ECTC Graduate Dies
Esther Mason Fulcher ’27, 105, of Stacy, died Monday, February 24, 2014, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, at Atlantic United Methodist Church with The Rev. George Gouge and The Rev. Paul Harris officiating. The interment followed at Stacy Community Cemetery.
Fulcher was born in Atlantic on January 1, 1909,to Joseph William and Elizabeth Hill Mason. Most of her life was spent in Carteret County, in Atlantic and Stacy, close to her family and that of her husband Edgar. She was a teacher at Stacy and Cove City NC and was the oldest living graduate (1927) of ECU, then East Carolina Teachers College.
In her later years, she became a traveler and ventured to many destinations in the U.S. and abroad. Throughout her life she had a happy, positive outlook and was a shining example to all around her. She found wonder and delight in everything and never complained. Whenever asked how she was, her reply was always “May as well say OK!” She jokingly attributed her lifelong good health and attitude to having no children. Esther loved Snug Harbor, her family, caregivers and friends and leaves an empty place but a beautiful memory in the hearts of everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her brother, Joseph W. Mason, Jr. and wife, Helen, of Atlantic as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, her husband, Edgar Fulcher; sister, Erah Mason Harris; and brothers, Ivey Mason, Leland Mason, Earl Mason, Curtis Mason, Alton Mason and Cecil Mason preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Campus Crusade for Christ, Hugh Jones, P. O. Box 628222, Orlando, Florida 32862. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. of Morehead City. Access online obituary and Internet condolences through www.brooksfuneralhomeandcrematory.com.
