2013 State Science Fair Winners (District 1)
Raleigh, N.C. – March 18, 2013 – Every basketball player competing in the ACC tournament this weekend knew how to put a backspin on a shot. Similarly, many of the young engineers and scientists (grades 3-12) at the 26th NC Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF) understand how that backspin removes energy as the ball meets the backboard, thereby increasing the chances of scoring. Both the players and the students are using science to excel.
More than 300 students from throughout the state presented their original research projects in science and engineering at the NCSEF on Saturday at Meredith College in Raleigh.
“In an increasingly competitive global job market, hands-on experience and critical thinking in the areas of science and engineering are sought-after skills. We commend these students and their teachers for their commitment and the innovation their research projects demonstrate, and look forward to seeing the long-term educational dividends they will reap as a result,” says Sam Houston, CEO and president of the NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center (NC SMT).
More than 70 awards from education, government and business partners were presented to students. “Our local and regional teachers and fair directors throughout the state continue to raise the standards for these student research projects across all STEM areas,” says NCSEF Director Judy Day. “Our 130-plus judges continue to share their pride in the quality of our student research across all events in grades 3-12.”
