Educational Leadership & Foundations
Empowering educators to become scholar-practitioners and leaders who drive critical discourse, inspire innovation, and foster excellence for all
The Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations at East Carolina University empowers educators and administrators to improve educational systems through a blend of critical inquiry, theoretical understanding, and practical application. Their programs cultivate the essential knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed to lead and transform education across varied settings.
Foundations courses provide prospective educators with a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, structural, and ideological forces influencing education. Drawing on disciplines like history, philosophy, and sociology, these courses encourage students to critically analyze education’s societal role and develop practices that align with democratic educational goals.
For current and aspiring administrators, graduate-level educational leadership courses equip them with the expertise to effectively lead and manage PK-12 and higher education institutions. The department offers a Master of School Administration (MSA) for North Carolina principal licensure, and Doctor of Education (EdD) programs in PK-12 Educational Leadership (leading to superintendent licensure) and Higher Education Administration. Department faculty actively collaborate with regional partners and conduct applied research to enhance teaching and leadership practices, ultimately improving educational outcomes.
